Antique Computers And
The CPU's That Made Them Tick.

Updated 07-10-2006

In the Beginning was the Intel 4004. It was THE first CPU (non-bit slice), one would think that it would have garnered alot of attention and alot of design wins, but it did not. While the 4004 did garner a lot of attention, few designs actually implemented it. As Intel (and other companies turned out new and (mostly) improved chips more companies began implementing designs that used them.

When the IBM PC came out there had already been several hundred computer designs mass produced using a variety of CPUs. This page should give you an idea of what devices used what CPU in the beginning of our Computer World.

The list is ordered by CPU used, I have included a few random pics of the various computers mentioned.
Note the list is far from complete, it is just to give you an idea of what is out there (or was).

As you can readily see computers took on many sizes and shapes in the olden days. The 'beige box' craze did not come about until the late 80's in an effort to standardize form factors, and thus components.
