Intel Advances the Mobile PC Platform

New Pentium® Processor with MMX™ Technology Enables Enhanced Capabilities and Innovative Form Factors for Mobile Computing

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 8, 1997 -- Intel Corporation today introduced two high-performance mobile Pentium® processors with MMX™ technology that consume up to 50 percent less power than previous generation mobile processors. The new 200- and 233-MHz mobile Pentium processors with MMX technology are the first products manufactured using Intel’s advanced 0.25 micron process technology. The low power consumption of the 200- and 233-MHz mobile Pentium processors with MMX technology enables manufacturers to provide users with the latest mobile computing technologies without sacrificing battery life.

"Intel’s ongoing commitment to mobile innovation and to meeting the performance and mobility requirements of notebook PC users is exemplified by the introduction of the 200- and 233-MHz mobile Pentium processors with MMX technology," said Stephen P. Nachtsheim, corporate vice president and general manager, Intel Mobile and Handheld Products Division. "The processors improved performance coupled with lower power consumption, provide notebook manufacturers with a unique opportunity to offer users better battery life along with features and functionality that are on par with desktop systems."

New Capabilities

Today, notebook PC users don’t have to compromise performance and functionality for mobility. The low power consumption of the 200- and 233-MHz mobile Pentium processors with MMX technology enables manufacturers to develop mobile PCs in a broad range of new form factors and configurations. In addition to a variety of shapes, sizes and weights, systems equipped with the 200- and 233-MHz mobile Pentium processors with MMX technology will feature improved displays, large-capacity hard disk drives, high-speed CD-ROM drives, and even DVD drives, illustrating the migration of mobile computing toward desktop equivalence.

"The mobile 200- and 233-MHz Pentium processors with MMX technology provide business users with the high performance and multimedia capabilities to operate graphic-intensive applications, share applications via video conferencing, wirelessly download files from a corporation’s intranet site and develop professional presentations virtually anywhere, anytime," Nachtsheim said.

0.25 Micron Process Technology

The impressive increase in performance and decrease in power consumption of 200- and 233-MHz mobile Pentium processors with MMX technology are attributed primarily to the benefits of Intel’s new 0.25 micron manufacturing technology. The 0.25 micron manufacturing process and Intel’s Voltage Reduction Technology decrease the core voltage from 2.45 volts to 1.8 volts and the I/O interface from 3.3 volts to 2.5 volts relative to previous generation processors. This reduction in voltages is a key element in enabling the production of faster processors that consume less power.

High-Performance, Low-Power Mobile Solution – Technical Details

Whether on the road or in the office, mobile PC users benefit from the improved performance capabilities of Intel’s 200- and 233-MHz Pentium processors with MMX technology. In addition to a 32-Kbyte on-chip cache and architectural enhancements that improve the processor’s performance when running software applications such as office suites, MMX technology also enables fast Internet communications and provides high-quality graphics, video and sound for creating professional-looking presentations.

The 233-MHz mobile Pentium processor with MMX technology boasts a 20 percent integer performance improvement over the 166-MHz Pentium processor with MMX technology based on the industry standard benchmark ZD CPUmark32*. The 233-MHz mobile Pentium processor with MMX technology also posts a 29 percent improvement on Intel’s Media Benchmark, which measures performance on media-rich applications, and a 25 percent improvement on 3DWinbench*97, which measures floating-point capabilities typically found in 3-D applications, games, and CAD programs.

The mobile 200- and 233-MHz Pentium processors with MMX technology deliver high performance with a thermal design power (TDP typical) of 3.4 watts and 3.9 watts, respectively. These improvements represent nearly a 50 percent decrease in power consumption over the previous generation 166-MHz mobile Pentium processor with MMX technology.

Processor Pricing & Packaging Options

Intel offers the 200- and 233-MHz mobile Pentium processors with MMX technology in two levels of integration – the Intel Mobile Module or Tape Carrier Packaging (TCP), both specifically designed for mobile PCs. The new processors extend Intel’s Mobile Module product offering, which is designed to enable notebook OEMs to rapidly deliver systems with the latest Intel mobile processors to their customers.

The thin and lightweight 320-pin TCP is well suited for ultrathin notebook PCs. In 1,000 unit quantities, the 200- and 233-MHz mobile Pentium processor with MMX technology housed in TCP is available for $530 and $691, respectively. In 1,000 unit quantities, the 200- and 233-MHz Pentium processor with MMX technology mobile module is available for $604 and $764, respectively.
