Digital's StrongARM Chips Pull
Away in Embedded Performance Race

...Set New Embedded-Class Performance Records...

MAYNARD, Mass., Sept. 12, 1996 -- Digital Equipment Corporation today
announced new versions of its StrongARM SA-110 microprocessor that take
StrongARM performance beyond 250 MIPS and deliver dramatically improved
price/performance over competitive offerings. The announcement
reinforces Digital's performance leadership and sets new
price/performance marks for embedded processors.

The new versions of the StrongARM SA-110 microprocessor announced today
operate at 233MHz and 166MHz. The new SA-110 233MHz processor couples
the large, on-chip cache and fast bus interface of the original SA-110
with a higher-speed pipeline to deliver performance estimated at 270
Dhrystone 2.1 MIPS, five to ten times that of competitively priced
parts. The new SA-110 at 166MHz offers embedded designers access to 200
Dhrystone MIPS performance at lower price points.

Extended Range, New Applications

Both products feature the low-power ARM architecture and high-
performance enhancements of existing StrongARM SA-110 microprocessors,
while extending the family's range of price and performance. The
StrongARM SA-110 233MHz chip is volume-priced at less than $50, setting
a new price/performance record of 5.5 MIPS per dollar. It dissipates
just one watt of power.

The StrongARM family now encompasses high-performance processors for
high-bandwidth network switching, intelligent office machines, and
storage systems; low-cost processors suitable for traditional embedded
control and consumer applications; and very low power processors
optimized for battery-operated systems such as personal digital
assistants (PDAs). StrongARM microprocessors are supported by a growing
infrastructure of hardware, software and simulation tools, including
those built around earlier products in the ARM family.

'Blow Lid Off' Embedded Performance

According to Douglas Carrigan, StrongARM embedded marketing manager for
Digital Semiconductor, "Today's top StrongARM microprocessors blow the
lid off traditional embedded processor performance. They deliver
performance rivaling that of desktop computer processors at sub-watt
power levels, and in small packages that meet the cost, form factor, and
environmental constraints of embedded and consumer applications."

Pricing, Availability

Prices for the new StrongARM SA-110 microprocessors are $49 for the
233MHz version and $42 for the 166MHz chip in 10,000-unit quantities.
Samples are currently being shipped, and volume production will begin in
December.
