IBM Adds Speedier PowerPC to Embedded Offerings

Fishkill, N.Y., March 23, 1998

IBM today introduced an 80MHz version of the PowerPC 403GCX, a powerful, low-cost processor for demanding embedded applications. Available in clock speeds of 50, 66, and now 80 MHz, the 403GCX can be used in printers, remote access terminals, network computers, set-top boxes, hubs, routers, modems, scanners, and digital cameras.

The opportunity for embedded processors is growing rapidly, especially in high-performance, 32-bit applications where the PowerPC architecture shines," said Elliott Newcombe, Manager of Embedded PowerPC Marketing and Applications at IBM Microelectronics. "The PowerPC 403GCX sets a new performance benchmark for integrated PowerPC processors."

Available today, the price of the PowerPC 403GCX 80 MHz processor is $29.60 in quantities of 10,000. The 403GCX is packaged in a 160-pin PQFP; a plastic ball grid array (PBGA) package will be available by the end of the year.

The PowerPC 403GCX adds to IBM's already extensive range of embedded processors for emerging consumer, communications, and imaging applications. The IBM portfolio includes the low-power, low-cost PowerPC 401GF, the PowerPC 603e and EM603e processors, and the high-performance PowerPC 740/750 processors. All processors are backed by IBM support, development tools, and standard and custom chipsets. Customers can also select from IBM’s fast-growing portfolio of cores--known as Blue Logic technology--for custom embedded solutions with fast time-to-market.
