Fujitsu Microelectronics, Inc. to Demo Evaluation-Board Based New Superscalar MB86860 SPARClite Family at Embedded Systems Conference

San Jose, Calif. - October 6, 1998 - At this year's Embedded Systems Conference - West, Fujitsu Microelectronics, Inc. (FMI) will demonstrate a new evaluation board based on its new 200 MHz MB86860 series of SPARClite RISC microprocessors.

The MB86860, which is based on the SPARC architecture from SPARC International, Inc., is a powerful embedded microprocessor that features a superscalar RISC CPU core and 64-bit SDRAM interface, along with 16 KB of each of Icache and Dcache. With its 200-MHz superscalar CPU core capable of two simultaneous integer instructions, the device can perform integer arithmetic operations at a rate of 420 MIPS, the highest level in its class.

Based on the SPARC architecture, the MB86860 series performs integer arithmetic operations compatible with conventional SPARC instructions running on Sun workstations. The MB86860 series has SPARClite buses compatible with the other SPARClite family of devices so it can use existing hardware design resources such as peripheral chipsets.

The new SPARClite version is targeted at network system applications, including hubs, routers and systems that support ATM technology, according to Basheer Ahmed, director of marketing for embedded processors at FMI. The product is also ideal for high-speed color laser printers.

The new MB86860 SPARClite series is intended to support almost all popular ISV products in the industry including Tornado from Wind River Systems, Inc. Fujitsu is licensed to use the Java OS from Sun Microsystems, Inc., so it will extend the application scope to network systems with multimedia functions.

Limited samples of the new MB86860 SPARClite processor will be available in a 352-pin BGA package at the end of the fourth calendar quarter.
