PRODUCT ANNOUNCEMENT : NEW POWERPC EMBEDDED CONTROLLER

PRODUCT:
The PowerPC 403GC, the newest member of the PowerPC
Embedded Controller Series from IBM Microelectronics.

TARGET APPLICATIONS:
The PowerPC 403GC is designed for embedded applications
that require a multitasking operating system. Depending on
the implementation, these include set-top boxes, video games,
office automation, PDAs/personal communication devices,
communications (hubs, routers, switches), and digital
cameras.

BENEFITS:
The PowerPC 403GC allows embedded system designers to
design for cost-sensitive, high performance embedded
applications. It features the high performance PowerPC
architecture, optimized for very low power applications.

The PowerPC 403GC is the third member of the PowerPC 4xx
embedded controller family. This increasingly large product
family enables designers to optimize performance by selecting
the device which best meets system design requirements.

IBM's PowerPC Embedded Tools Program gives customers access to
development tools from over 35 leading independent software
vendors. This program complements IBM's own suite of
development tools, which includes the RISCWatch debug and
development tool, OS Open real-time operating system, an IBM
compiler, and the 400 series evaluation kit.

KEY FEATURES:
To support multitasking embedded applications, the PowerPC 403GC
includes an on-chip memory management unit (MMU), providing
address translation and access protection facilities. These
features can be used to isolate critical application code and
extend operating system reliability in complex system
environments. The MMU architecture on the 403GC is highly
optimized for embedded applications, providing features such as
variable page sizes and protection zones.

The combination of low power consumption and high performance on
the PowerPC 403GC allows system designers to meet the demanding
requirements of low cost, data intensive embedded systems. The
403GC is one of the lowest power-consuming controllers in its
class, providing customers significant power management while
maintaining a high level of performance.

The PowerPC 403GC is designed with a flexible bus interface to
allow memory and peripherals to be attached directly with little
or no glue logic. The device is packaged in a 160-pin plastic
quad flat pack (PQFP).

The PowerPC 403GC integrates a four-channel DMA controller, DRAM
controller, I/O controller, serial port, two-way set associative
instruction and data caches, multilevel interrupt controller,
multiple timer facilities and a flexible bus interface to allow
direct attachment of memory and peripherals.

Power consumption has been limited to 230mW at 25 MHz.

PERFORMANCE:
The PowerPC 403GC delivers 72K Dhrystones/second of
performance at 33 MHz.

AVAILABILITY:
The PowerPC 403GC is being offered in 25 MHz and 33 MHz
versions. Samples of these devices are available now with
volume production expected in the fourth quarter.
