FOR RELEASE: January 5, 1999

Motorola's PowerPC(tm) 750 Microprocessor Gets Boost to 400 MHz

Customers Benefit from Speed Enhancement and Significant Price Reductions

AUSTIN, Texas - Jan. 5, 1999 - Motorola today announced the availability of the latest edition to the PowerPC 750(tm) family, introducing a 400 MHz version of the award winning microprocessor.

Designed to maximize system level performance, this newest PowerPC 750 microprocessor gives customers the flexibility to build products such as high-end desktop solutions and networking and communications devices. Motorola has also reduced respective prices of the existing PowerPC 750 microprocessor family by as much as 26%.

Benefits to Customers --------------------- The jump in performance and simultaneous price reduction of Motorola's PowerPC 750 product line is a winning combination for systems manufacturers. As demand on equipment manufacturers to provide improved performance at competitive prices for their products continues to grow, the Motorola PowerPC 750 microprocessor family price/performance value also continues to meet these demands.

"By understanding the needs of our customers, Motorola can best apply its design and manufacturing technologies to produce microprocessors that enable customers to deliver exciting and compelling products to the marketplace," said Will Swearingen, PowerPC strategic marketing manager for the Motorola Networking and Computing Systems Group. "The new 400 MHz version of our PowerPC 750 processor, designed to meet both the performance and power needs of our customers, is a good example of the benefits of this approach."

"Today Apple launched the new Power Macintosh G3, forever changing what customers should expect from a desktop personal computer," said Jon Rubinstein, Apple's senior vice president of hardware engineering. "Motorola's 400 MHz PowerPC microprocessor delivers Pentium-crushing power, a perfect fit for the most expandable, beautiful, and accessible Macintosh we've ever made."

The new 400 MHz PowerPC 750 microprocessors are available today at a suggested unit list price of $495 in quantities of 1000. Also, the suggested unit list price (1000 quantity) of the 366 MHz and the 333 MHz versions of the PowerPC 750 processors have been reduced to $381 and $286 respectively. This represents a reduction in price of 26% for the 366 MHz part and 25% for the 333 MHz part compared to fourth quarter 1998 prices.

Operating at a 3.4 to 5.8 watt typical power dissipation range, the PowerPC 750 microprocessors have 3.3v I/Os, a 32KB instruction cache, a 32KB data cache, 6.35 million transistors, and are in 360-pin CBGA (ceramic ball grid array) packaging. The 400 MHz PowerPC 750 microprocessor achieves a performance level on the industry standard SPEC benchmark of 18.8 SPECint95 and 12.2 SPECfp95. Motorola
