New Pentium® II Processor 300 MHz -- Intel’s Highest Performance Mobile Processor

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 9, 1998 -- Building on the broad and rapid market adoption of Pentium® II processor-based mobile PCs, Intel Corporation today introduced its highest performance mobile Pentium II processor. The new mobile Pentium II processor 300 MHz offers mobile PC users a performance boost while preserving system battery life.

As part of Intel’s strategy to deliver specific products for different market segments, mobile Pentium II processors are designed to address the unique physical size, thermal and power consumption requirements of mobile PCs. For example, Intel’s mobile Pentium II processors incorporate an innovative technology called Quick Start, which drops the processor power consumption to 0.4 watts when the mobile PC is idle or inactive. This low-power mode preserves the battery life of mobile systems.

Additionally, the mobile Pentium II processor 300 MHz is based on the same P6 microarchitecture, packaging and thermal specifications as the 233- and 266-MHz mobile Pentium II processors introduced in April 1998. Therefore, Intel’s newest mobile processor requires no new system design engineering for PC makers to incorporate it into new mobile systems.

"We have seen exceptional market acceptance of Pentium II processor-based mobile PCs," said Robert Jecmen, vice president and general manager, Intel Mobile and Handheld Products Group. "The Pentium II processor 300 MHz offers investment protection for new mobile PC buyers, who can be confident that their system’s performance capability is best suited to take advantage of demanding applications today and in the future."

Mobile PCs equipped with the Pentium II processor 300 MHz are available from OEMs in a variety of shapes and sizes, ranging from four-pound thin and light systems, to mainstream and full-size mobile PCs that offer users features such as high-quality, soft digital video disk (DVD) playback. The increased performance capabilities of the mobile Pentium II processor 300 MHz allow mobile PC users to view for the first time full-screen DVD-based movies without dropping portions of the picture or frame, resulting in a better overall viewing experience.

Product Features, Price and Availability

The mobile Pentium II processor 300 MHz represents a new high-water mark in the performance capabilities of Intel’s family of mobile Pentium II processors. Based on the industry standard benchmark Winbench98* CPU32, the mobile Pentium II processor 300 MHz posts a nine percent integer performance improvement over the Pentium II processor 266 MHz. The 300-MHz mobile Pentium II processor also posts a 12 percent improvement using Norton Multimedia*, a six percent improvement on Winstone98* and a 12 percent improvement on Winbench98 FPU**.

The mobile Pentium II processor 300 MHz, manufactured on Intel’s advanced 0.25 micron process technology, includes performance enhancing features such as Dual Independent Bus architecture, Dynamic Execution, Intel® MMX™ technology and a closely coupled 512-KB Level 2 cache. The mobile Pentium II processor system bus operates at 66 MHz. To address the unique thermal requirements of mobile PCs, the new mobile Pentium II processor contains built-in power management features that help to manage power consumption and improve reliability.

Intel has reduced the internal core voltage of the mobile Pentium II processor 300 MHz to 1.6 volts, resulting in Intel’s lowest voltage mobile processor introduced to date. The 300-MHz mobile Pentium II processor core generates 7.8 watts TDP (thermal design power) typical and with the addition of the second level cache, the 300-MHz mobile Pentium II processor operates at 9.0 watts.

Available today in a mini-cartridge or Intel Mobile Module with the "north bridge" portion of the Mobile 440BX chip set, the mobile Pentium II processor 300 MHz in 1,000 unit quantities is available to manufacturers for $637 and $710, respectively. A version of the Intel mobile module that supports AGP graphics is also available to manufacturers for $715.
