266- and 166-MHz Pentium® Processors with MMX™ Technology Offer Mobile PC Users Higher Performance, New Capabilities

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jan. 12, 1998 – Intel Corporation today announced two new mobile Pentium® processors with MMX™ technology that continue to enhance the performance and improve the power consumption of mobile PCs. The new 266-MHz Pentium processor with MMX technology is the highest performing Intel mobile processor available today, while the 166-MHz Pentium processor with MMX technology is the lowest power consuming Intel Pentium microprocessor introduced to date. The new 266- and 166-MHz Pentium processors with MMX technology complement Intel’s existing family of low-power 0.25 micron mobile processors which also includes 200- and 233-MHz versions.

With the introduction of the 166- and 266-MHz mobile Pentium processors with MMX technology, mobile PC users can choose from a broad range of attractively priced systems. The 266-MHz mobile Pentium processor with MMX technology brings a new level of performance to a variety of mobile PCs -- ranging from systems with advanced features such as DVD drives and high-capacity hard disk drives, to thin and light-weight notebooks. Mobile PCs equipped with the 266-MHz Pentium processor with MMX technology offer business users higher-quality and faster Internet browsing, improved responsiveness when using applications such as office suites, and enhanced graphics performance when developing and delivering presentations.

The new 166-MHz Pentium processor with MMX technology offers the same performance available in the previous 0.35 micron version, but consumes substantially less power. The lower power consumption of the166-MHz Pentium processor with MMX technology is ideally suited for the emerging category of mini-notebook PCs which weigh as little as two pounds and are as small as a videocassette tape. The lower power consumption of the 166-MHz Pentium processor with MMX technology provides mini-notebook PC users with higher level processing and improved battery life.

The 166- and 266-MHz mobile Pentium processors with MMX technology are manufactured using Intel’s 0.25 micron process technology. The 166-MHz mobile Pentium processor with MMX technology operates at an internal core voltage of 1.8 volts and consumes 2.9 watts typical thermal design power (TDP). The 266-MHz mobile Pentium processor with MMX technology operates at an internal voltage of 2.0 volts and consumes 5.3 watts typical thermal design power (TDP).

The 266-MHz mobile Pentium processor with MMX technology posts a 9.4 percent integer performance improvement over the 233-MHz Pentium processor with MMX technology using industry standard benchmark ZD CPUmark32*. Additionally, the 266-MHz version delivers a 13 percent improvement on Intel’s Media Benchmark, and a 9.1 percent improvement on 3DWinbench*97 when compared to the 233-MHz mobile Pentium processor with MMX technology.

Available today, the 266-MHz mobile Pentium processor with MMX technology is available in 1,000unit quantities in Tape Carrier Package (TCP) or on board Intel’s Mobile Module with 512K level 2 cache for $659 and $732, respectively. The 166-MHz version is also available in 1,000 unit quantities in TCP for $300 or Mobile Module for $373.
