Cyrix Announces 166 and 180MHz MediaGX™ Processors
Enables Complete $999 Multimedia PC Including Monitor

Richardson, Texas — June 30, 1997 — Enabling PC manufacturers to offer a complete multimedia system including monitor for $999, Cyrix Corporation today announced shipment of its 166 and 180MHz MediaGX™ processors. The MediaGX processor reduces system cost by incorporating multimedia and system functions right on the CPU — a first for the PC industry. Since it first came on the scene earlier this year (February 1997), the MediaGX architecture has gained support from a number of PC companies, including Compaq, First International Computer, BCM Advanced Research/GVC, IBM Canada, Samsung and Tatung. In fact, the 180MHz MediaGX processor will be incorporated into Compaq’s new Presario 2200 PC, also announced today.

"The new 166 and 180MHz MediaGX processors enable our customers to deliver high-performance multimedia PCs at extremely affordable prices," said Steve Tobak, vice president of corporate and channel marketing at Cyrix Corporation. "This latest technological advancement truly brings mainstream personal computing to consumers at prices they can afford. We expect the industry to experience an influx of new users and second- or third-time buyers as a result." "Cyrix has uniquely engineered a new processor in the MediaGX CPU that helps PC manufacturers, like Compaq, to deliver full-featured PCs to consumers at previously unattainable price points," said Brett Faulk, Presario marketing manager at Compaq. "The MediaGX solution enables a no-compromise $999 multimedia PC, including the monitor."

The Technology Roadmap
The MediaGX 166 and 180MHz processors are currently being manufactured on a 0.35 micron process at IBM Microelectronics. Cyrix plans to offer both system- and chip-level feature enhancements throughout 1997. The MediaGX roadmap includes integrated Universal Serial Bus (USB) support and MPEG video acceleration. In addition, MediaGX processor speeds are expected to increase to 200MHz and beyond, and feature MMX™ instructions, by late this year.

Price and Availability
The 166 and 180MHz MediaGX processors, including the 5510 companion chip, are available at $88 and $121, respectively, in 1,000 unit quantities. The 150 and 133MHz MediaGX processors, including the 5510 companion chip, are priced at $75 and $63, respectively, in 1,000 unit quantities.
