SPARC TECHNOLOGY BUSINESS SHIPS 110MHz VERSION OF POPULAR MICROSPARC-II PROCESSOR

SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- May 4, 1995

-- Sun Microsystems' SPARC Technology Business today announced general availability of its 110MHz MicroSPARC-II&trade, the industry's most highly integrated general-purpose microprocessor. The new processor, running at a 30 percent higher frequency than its predecessors, is the most recent addition to the high-volume MicroSPARC-II product family. MicroSPARC-II is used extensively in desktop and computing applications.

With the availability of more computing power in the product, SPARC Technology Business has targeted customers supplying systems for the desktop and for embedded applications in networked peripherals, including networked workgroup printers, network routers and hubs, and telecommunications applications. The new processor boosts MicroSPARC-II performance to 76SPECint and 65SPECfp.

"With the MicroSPARC-II product line we're offering our customers "system-on-a-chip" integration to speed design and reduce overall system cost," said Art Swift, SPARC Technology Business vice president of marketing. "This combination of performance and integration, coupled with unparalleled SPARC¨ software and tool support, enables us to continue our expansion into the market for intelligent networked peripherals."

"From a price/performance perspective, the 110MHz MicroSPARC-II is precisely what we require to meet our goal of offering the most competitive products available today to the open standard VMEbus marketplace," said Steve Little, director of marketing at FORCE COMPUTERS. "Additionally, MicroSPARC-II offers our customers the scalability critical to supporting their applications in a high-throughput environment."

MicroSPARC-II is designed for easy integration into customer designs. By integrating the DRAM controller as well as SBus I/O controller, designers only need DRAM and SBus peripherals to complete the system. The 11O MHz MicroSPARC-II is pin-compatible with its 70 and 85MHz predecessors.

"As a manufacturer of portable workstations, we depend on superior, open-architecture based processors to provide our customers with the latest equivalent capabilities and performance that are available on the desktop" said Bob Shields, director of marketing at RDI Computer Corp. "The 110MHz MicroSPARC-II enables us to stay synchronized with new workstation technologies introduced by Sun and other desktop vendors. We plan to incorporate this technology into our portable products in the near future."

The 110MHz MicroSPARC-II requires no application or operating system changes, allowing customers an easy upgrade path to higher performance. It is binary-compatible with over 9,400 software solutions developed for the SPARC platform.

Initial volume pricing for the 110MHz MicroSPARC-II processor is $649 in thousand-piece quantities. Product is available immediately. The 85MHz MicroSPARC-II is priced at $415 in thousand-piece quantities, and the 70MHz processor is $379. Silicon design licenses for the MicroSPARC-II are also available from SPARC Technology Business.

SPARC Technology Business, a division of Sun Microsystems Inc., was formed in April 1993 to develop, design and distribute SPARC technologies and products worldwide. SPARC Technology Business' portfolio includes microprocessors, chipsets, modules, boards technology licenses, silicon and system packages and consulting services. SPARC Technology Business has more than 500 employees working in product development, engineering marketing and international sales and support.
